CleverReach Countdown Timer – How to Add One with CleverTimer

Integration
An astronaut waves beside a rocket-powered envelope showing a countdown timer.

Your sale ends on Sunday, or registration for your webinar closes tomorrow: a countdown makes that deadline stand out in your newsletter. CleverTimer creates an animated timer image that you can add to CleverReach using its image URL. You don’t need HTML skills for this method.

CleverReach now also has a built-in countdown element (guide in German). CleverTimer gives you a choice of timer designs and optional Apple Mail fallbacks: for requests identified as possible MPP activity, you can show a fixed message or hide the timer. This guide walks you through adding CleverTimer to your newsletter.

Why use a countdown in your CleverReach newsletter?

A well-placed countdown draws attention to your offer and makes its time limit visible. That can give readers a reason to stop putting off a purchase or registration. Whether it leads to more clicks or sales depends on your offer and your audience.

A countdown can work well for:

  • Sales and discounts: The promotion ends at a fixed time, whether it’s a weekend sale or a Black Friday offer.
  • Product launches: Count down to the moment your product goes on sale.
  • Webinars and events: Highlight the registration deadline or the event’s start time. Make it clear which one the timer refers to.
  • Advent calendars and seasonal promotions: Each daily offer ends at the time you’ve announced.
  • Abandoned-cart reminders: Remind shoppers about a discount with a fixed expiry date. Opening the email does not start a new personal countdown in CleverTimer.

How to add a countdown to CleverReach

Step 1: Create your countdown with CleverTimer

  • Open the CleverTimer generator and set the end date, time and time zone.
  • Choose a design and adjust the colours to suit your newsletter. Check the language used for the timer’s labels, too.
  • Choose an Apple Mail fallback if you’d like to use one. “Show image” lets you add a fixed message, such as “Offer ends on 27 November 2026 at 8 pm (CET).” “Hide” provides a transparent replacement image instead. “Disabled” leaves the MPP fallback switched off.
  • Click “Create timer”. Enter your email address, accept the terms and confirm the privacy notice. You’ll receive a six-digit activation code by email. Enter it to activate your timer; there’s no need to create an account.
  • Copy the Timer URL.

Tip: The timer’s image URL is all you need for this CleverReach setup. You don’t need the HTML code.

Our article on Apple Mail Privacy Protection and email countdown timers explains how the fallbacks work. They provide an alternative image for requests identified as possible MPP activity, but they cannot guarantee detection of every Apple Mail user.

Step 2: Add the countdown to CleverReach

  • Open your newsletter: Log in to CleverReach and open the mailing you want to edit.
  • Add an image element: Drag an image element into place. Keep it near the offer and call-to-action button so readers can see what the countdown is for.
  • Set the image source: Click the element without choosing an image from the image library. In the image settings, paste your timer URL as the external image source.
  • Check the layout: Adjust the image width to suit your newsletter and make sure the numbers are readable on a phone. Add useful alt text for the image.
  • Add the deadline: Write the date, time and time zone as regular text beside the offer. Then send yourself a test email.

Important: Use the generated timer URL. Don’t download the GIF and upload it to CleverReach’s image library. That would reuse an already generated file rather than let CleverTimer calculate the remaining time when a new request reaches its server.

What your countdown looks like in the newsletter

Your countdown appears as an animated GIF. CleverTimer calculates the remaining time when the image is requested from its server. If the email client loads a saved version instead, the time shown may be out of date. Reopening the email does not guarantee a fresh request.

The animation is a short loop. It doesn’t keep checking the server while an email stays open. That’s why the written deadline should always appear alongside the offer.

If your test email shows a still image, GIF animation may be disabled in the email client. Microsoft explains this behaviour in Outlook. If no image appears at all, check the image URL and whether the client is set to load external images.

What CleverTimer offers for your newsletter

CleverTimer lets you create a free countdown and add it using an image element. You can choose a timer design, adjust the colours and decide whether an MPP fallback suits your newsletter. There’s no extra account to set up; you activate the timer by email.

You can reuse the generated image URL in other newsletters with the same deadline. It also works in other email templates that support external images. For a new promotion with a different deadline, create a new timer to match.

Tips for using countdowns in newsletters

  • Keep the offer, timer and button together. Readers should be able to tell what the deadline applies to and what they can do next.
  • Write out the deadline. “Offer ends on 27 November 2026 at 8 pm (CET)” still makes sense when someone reads the email later. “Only two hours left” might no longer be true.
  • Test the email you receive. Check the mobile layout, Apple Mail with MPP enabled and other clients your audience uses. Look at the message again later and after the deadline. The CleverReach editor preview alone won’t show you all of these behaviours.
  • Check the landing page. After the click, readers should find the same terms and deadline. Once the offer has ended, the landing page should make that clear.
  • Compare the results. Test a version with a countdown against one without. Focus on clicks and completed purchases or registrations. Open rates alone tell you little about the timer’s effect: Apple Mail, for example, can load images in the background without anyone reading the message.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need HTML skills?

No. For the setup described here, copy the timer URL and use it as the external image source in a CleverReach image element. You don’t need the HTML code that CleverTimer also provides.

Is CleverTimer free, and do I need an account?

CleverTimer is free to use, and you don’t need to create an account. To activate your timer, enter your email address and confirm the six-digit code sent to you by email.

Does the countdown work in every email client?

An up-to-date, animated countdown cannot be guaranteed in every client. Some settings prevent external images from loading or disable GIF animation. Saved image versions can also show an older remaining time. Include the deadline as regular email text and check a received test email in the clients that matter to your audience.

Does the countdown work in Apple Mail?

With Mail Privacy Protection enabled, Apple can load external images in the background before anyone reads the message. Readers may then see an older timer image. CleverTimer offers a static message or a transparent replacement image for requests identified as possible MPP activity. The fallback doesn’t stop caching. Our guide to Apple Mail Privacy Protection explains how to use it.

Add your next CleverReach countdown with CleverTimer

For your next newsletter, choose a fixed deadline and a design, then copy the generated timer URL. Place the countdown beside your offer to make the time limit visible. Writing out the deadline keeps the offer clear even when the email client doesn’t show an up-to-date timer image.
