Want to show when a sale ends or a webinar starts in your Mailchimp newsletter? Create a free email countdown timer with CleverTimer, then paste its complete HTML code into a Mailchimp Code block. You don't need to write the code yourself.
This guide covers the new Mailchimp email builder: designing and activating your timer, adding it to the email and checking a delivered test. The timer counts down to a fixed date and time. Opening the email does not start a new personal deadline.
How to add a countdown timer to Mailchimp
Step 1: Create and activate your timer
- Open the CleverTimer generator and set the end date, time and time zone.
- Choose a design, then adjust the colours and the language of the timer's labels to suit your newsletter.
- Choose an Apple Mail fallback if you'd like to use one: “Show image” displays a fixed message with your text; “Hide” supplies a transparent replacement image. “Disabled” leaves the fallback switched off. Replacement images are used for requests identified as possible MPP activity.
- Click “Create timer”, enter your email address, accept the terms and agree to the use of your email address for activation. Request the six-digit activation code and enter it to create your timer. You don't need an account.
- Copy the complete Timer HTML Code. Pasting only the Timer URL into the Mailchimp Code block won't embed the image.
Step 2: Paste the HTML into Mailchimp
- Open your campaign or template in Mailchimp and go to the email builder.
- Drag a Code block from the sidebar into your layout, for example between your offer and registration button.
- Open the block, remove any sample code and paste in your complete Timer HTML Code.
- Click “Done” to return to the layout and check the placement. Labels may vary with the editor view or interface language.
The screenshot shows where to paste the code, with German timer labels as an example. You can choose English labels in CleverTimer. Use your own generated code; the timer address in the screenshot is a placeholder. Mailchimp also explains the process in its guide to Code blocks in the new builder.
Tip: Don't download the timer GIF and upload it to Mailchimp. That would reuse an already generated image file. The HTML code keeps the original CleverTimer image URL, so the server can calculate the remaining time when it receives a request. It does not prevent email apps from caching images.
Mailchimp's Image block guide describes uploading an image or selecting one from the Content Studio. For this countdown, use the Code block. You don't need to create an entirely custom-coded email template.
Step 3: Check a delivered test email
Use Mailchimp's test-send feature to send yourself the email. Open it on a phone and desktop in the email apps your audience uses. The builder preview alone isn't enough.
- Deadline: Check the date, time and time zone. Include the deadline as ordinary text beside the offer, for example “Register by 27 November 2026 at 8 pm (CET).”
- Display: Are the digits readable on a phone? Does the timer fit its column? Add useful alt text in the HTML, such as “Countdown to the registration deadline”.
- Expiry: Open the test email again later and check what appears after the deadline. Reopening it does not force a fresh image request.
- Landing page: The offer and registration deadline should agree with the timer. Once the deadline has passed, make it clear that the promotion has ended.
Troubleshooting your Mailchimp countdown timer
The timer is missing, or the HTML appears as text
First check that you're using a Code block and have pasted the complete HTML code. A plain URL or HTML pasted into a regular text paragraph won't do the same job. If the email app blocks external images, their display must be allowed before the timer can appear.
The timer shows an old or incorrect remaining time
Start by checking the end date, time and time zone in the generator. CleverTimer calculates the remaining time when its server receives an image request. Email apps can display a saved version instead, and Apple Mail Privacy Protection can load images before the message is read. A GIF that's still animating is therefore not necessarily showing the current remaining time.
You can use the optional fallbacks for requests identified as possible MPP activity. They don't prevent caching or guarantee detection of every Apple Mail user. Our guide to Apple Mail Privacy Protection and countdown timers explains the details.
The GIF is static or doesn't fit the layout
Some email apps or settings display animated images as a still frame. A suitable image size and a written deadline help the message remain useful. If the timer is distorted, check whether its width and height were changed in the embed code. Keep the proportions intact and send another test email after adjusting it.
When to use a countdown in your newsletter
Use a timer for an offer with a real cutoff: a weekend sale, closing registration window or product launch. It makes the deadline visible; whether that leads to more clicks or purchases also depends on your offer and audience. Compare similar campaigns with and without a timer to see what works.

Frequently asked questions
You don't need to write your own code. Copy the complete Timer HTML Code from CleverTimer into a Mailchimp Code block, then check a test email. Changes to the size, spacing or alt text involve editing the embedded HTML.
You can insert the code into an automation email whose builder offers a Code block. The timer described here keeps the same fixed deadline for everyone. A personal offer such as “24 hours after signup” needs a solution that manages individual deadlines.
Its display depends on factors including Mail Privacy Protection and saved images. CleverTimer offers optional replacement images for requests identified as possible MPP activity. Check the delivered email and include the deadline as ordinary text as well.
CleverTimer is free, and you don't need an account. To create your timer, activate it with the six-digit code sent to your email address.
Prepare your next Mailchimp newsletter with a countdown
Set the deadline, choose a design and paste the HTML code into Mailchimp. Once the timer, written deadline and delivered test email look right, your newsletter is ready for sending.
